Gwadar
The word "Gwadar" is a combination of two balochi words
– Gwat meaning wind and Dar meaning Gateway.
Gwadar is a Port City on the southwestern coast of Baluchistan, Pakistan. The city is
located on the shores of the Arabian sea, approximately 700
kilometers to the west of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi. Gwadar is near the border with Iran, and is located to the east of the Persian
Gulf and opposite Oman. It
was an overseas possession of Oman from 1783 to 1958.
The Pakistan
Government annexed Gwadar into Balochistan province on the 1st of July, 1977 as
district head quarters of a newly formed Gwadar district and as the winter
capital of Balochistan province in 2011.
The
population of district, Gwadar is 235000 and it covers an area of 15210 sq km.
Its coastline stretches for approximately 600 km. District Gwadar consists of
four Tehsil i.e. Jiwani, Pasni, and Ormara.
History &
Location
In 1983, the
Khan of Kalat granted sovereignty over Gwadar to Taimor Sultan, the defeated
ruler of Muscat. When the Sultan subsequently regained Muscat, he was to
continue his rule in Gwadar by appointing a Governor. On 8th September, 1958,
Pakistan purchased the Gwadar enclave from Oman; Gwadar officially became part
of Pakistan on the 8th of December, 1958.
Gwadar is
strategically located at the apex of the Arabian Sea and at the mouth of the
Persian Gulf. District Gwadar boundary touches Awaran and Lasbella on the east,
Iran on the west, Arabian Sea on the south and District Kech on the
north.
Climate
Gwadar is
0-300 meters above sea level, is mainly dry, arid and hot, the oceanic
influence keeps the temperature lower in summer and higher in winter. As
compared to the inland in Gwadar, winters are shorter than summers. The climate
of Gwadar is semi-arid with hot summers with maximum temperature of 35 Celsius
and its temperature falls up to 13 Celsius during the month of January and
February.
